And here we are.

Saturday morning.

I’m awake because I went to bed early last night – tired from the mixing and rolling and waiting, but I made the chocolate almond cake, and the bread and the chocolate biscuits.

As I said last night, with varying degrees of success. The biscuits did not like my oven too much, or I rolled them too thin, or the oven was too hot – dunno. But they have a slight scorched taste to them πŸ˜‰

The bread came out just marvellous – I made 6 mini breads of which I’ve already eaten two – with just butter. Think today I’ll try a slice with lard – just like we did in the old days on the farm. See if it tastes the same.

the cake is iced. But I did not have 300g of almonds, only 100, so I replaced what I don’t have with normal flour – will have to wait until it’s tasted by somebody braver than me!! The mixing bowl leftovers I cleaned out with my finger tasted good, so I hope the finished product does to.

Buy, oh my! My kingdom for a food processor! I had to crush the almonds yesterday with my rolling pin. By hand. As well as the other mixing. The only times I was able to use my normal mixer was for the eggs and sugar. But I’m not going to buy one – the ex dumped one here a while ago – will have to take it out and try to find some attachments, see if it’s still usable. And then the fun can start πŸ˜‰

Of course, the kitchen looks as if a hurricane swept through it, but that’s poor old David’s problem. I’ll have to tidy up some – just to make the cleaning process a bit easier.

And then I get whatsapped this morning by the eldest. The partner has left in a huff again, and of course there’s tears involved. Wants to know from me what he should do. Gave him my personal opinion, which is to leave well alone. Can’t make somebody stay with you against their wishes. They just end up resenting you. But he’s the only one that can make that decision, and he has to do what he think is best. Poor kid. It would seem that it’s almost as difficult for the young ones to find somebody to love, and that loves you, as it is for the older folk!

I have to wonder why it’s so difficult? I do think it has something to do with the timeline people have these days in relationships. In the old days, you met over a cup of coffee, and you kept on meeting for innocuous reasons for quite a while before sex was even thought of, let alone mentioned. These days, you meet, go out once, and then you have to go to bed. If a girl does not put out, the guy leaves. If a guy does not imply the want Β for sex on the first date, he girl thinks there’s something wrong with her.

How I long for the old days where sex was just something you knew of, and not your only reason for being in a relationship! Not that the old folks did not get up to any hanky panky. Of course they did. I just don’t think they did it quite as fast as it’s done today. There were protocols to be followed, and certain rules to adhere to. These days, anything goes, and it goes as soon as possible. And once the current itch is scratched, time to move on to the next one.

Had yet another altercation with a previous random last night. The guy I went on the toy run with last year. Have not heard from him since then, and it was not a major issue either. Turns out the reason for the non communication was a shag buddy. That’s not in the picture anymore because she developed morals. Sigh. His words, not mine. And so I get a message. Probably going down the list to see who might be available. Kind of insulting really, and he was cut down to size quickly. Stupid people.

And, as I said to him. If I meet a man worth knowing, it will have to happen during my normal day today life, and not while trawling a website looking for likely candidates. Got yet another message last night – somebody wanting to get to know me more better. I mean really people! How stupid do you think I am?

Oh well. You live and learn.

Think today is a good day for a visit to Builders. See if I can get all I need to complete that bloody hole in the ground I like to call a frog pond!

Enjoy your Saturday…

    • The only reason for the pond H πŸ˜‰
Can’t wait for the first chirps from my very own pond πŸ™‚
Quite a pricey exercise actually!!! Hope this is the last money I spend on it!

  1. That baking session sounds really exhausting. Couldn’t you buy ground almonds? I have a dessert to make for sister’s Easter lunch party tomorrow, so I”l be in the kitchen for quite a while this afternoon. πŸ™‚ Good luck with the pond. One day it will be finished. πŸ˜•

    • I looked but I could not find any AD, just chipped or some such. Still, it gave the mixture a nice crunchy aspect πŸ˜‰ It’s an expensive cake, but I think it will go down well as a dessert for your lunch!
As for the pond, it’s an ongoing project as you well know, but I’m getting closer to completion every year πŸ™‚

  2. Biscuits are so difficult to get right. After much trial and error, I reckon they’re best taken out of the oven before they appear to be properly cooked, as they’ll firm up further while sitting on the side cooling.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the relationship thing — that it’s all too rushed. It quite puts off my rather shy son from asking anybody out at all.

    • They are difficult to get just right Sarah. Especially with a new recipe. I will know better next time πŸ˜‰
Although my sister’s kids liked them well enough – suppose kids don’t much care, as long as it is cookies πŸ˜‰
As for relationships – I quite understand your son’s reticence. The girls out there these days, they’re pieces of work!!

  3. I think I need to come by your place for some coffee, you seem to have baked way too much for yourself πŸ˜‰
As for the relationship thing, you know that I’m very biased and it’s gonna take someone really special and patient before anything will happen!

    • that’s the way it should be chickpea – not a hurried, rushed hurry after the first person that comes along.
      I have baked a lot indeed πŸ˜‰

  4. I can picture your kitchen. Mine looks that way now and I haven’t the ambition to do anything about it just yet. It’s only 2:14 p.m. here. ((giggles))
Yes, everyone is in a hurry these days and it’s not just the lines at fast food restaurants. This is one of the reasons I decided to duck out of the xo race. I like my company enough to keep me happy and anyway, I have lots to do to keep me busy.

    • That’s for us oldies – we can relax in our own company or that of like minded individuals. The poor kids on the other hand have the propagation of the species on their doorstep – I just wish they would veto their partners more carefully πŸ˜‰

  5. Well, you inspired me, J! No, I am not doing any baking, but I did go buy some Hot Cross Buns – only now realizing how they relate to Easter… every time I think I am getting knowledgeable, sigh. πŸ™‚ But they were delightful – I think there were some currants and stuff –
