Late night…

…city driving.

The road is not busy. Only movement you see is the traffic lights going from red to green to orange. Back to red again. Through the open window you happen to catch a dog barking at something. And this tune starts playing…

You drive along the quiet roads. Streetlights flashing past, standing sentinel at the side of the road. Just you and the black tarmac in front of you, the car’s head beams sweeping across the night, lighting up the blackness that the sentinels can’t banish. Music changes to this…

Your thoughts travels far. You seek out the old memories. The times gone by. The happy childhood. The children you brought into the world. You think about their lives. You think about yours. You relive the small days. The bad days. The tears. The laughter. You think of people long gone. How you danced on your father’s feet. How you and your boys played the same way. The hugs. The goodbyes. The farewells. The endings. Music changes yet again…

Your thoughts turn to life. Movement. You feel yourself sway across the dance floor. You feel a body close to yours, your feet moving in time with the heartbeat of the music. You are transported to a time when you were young and invincible. When the future was a fruit just waiting to be picked. When you still held life in the palm of your hand. Before everything else intruded. The music changes yet again…

Sadness with a pinch of hope latched onto it. Moments lost, lessons learnt. Lives changed – good or bad, makes no difference. Life will happen as it will. No surprise there.

Long days and pleasant nights…
