Cliché

The Daily prompt.

Missive : Clichés become clichés for a reason. Tell us about the last time a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush for you.

A better question might have been, when wasn’t it better to have a bird in hand than two in the bush.

I married a schemer. A promise maker of note. Not so hot on the keeping.

He had dreams and saw visions. Lived in a fool’s world of schemes and promises. And I was pegged as the one that held him back.

But I was always the one that could see past the presumed riches and on to the inevitable fall from grace. I was always the one that stopped the dreams from getting too involved, to stop things from harming my children.

Because for me, it has always been better to keep what you have than to gamble everything on a possible maybe.

Looking at the way things are now, the one time I chucked the bird in hand for the promise of two in the bush, I came short. Horribly. Fell flat on my face. It’s been 2 years and I’m still reeling.

But the ex and the new wife, that’s apparently NOT holding him back, has gone from strength to strength. Have a business that does well enough looking at the place they stay in. Saw the world, travel to distant lands every so often, go on weekends away, and holidays. Drive luxury sedans.

And where am I? Still in the same place I’ve been in for the past 12 years. Still driving the same car I’ve been driving for the past 7 years. Have not been on holiday in years. Weekends away? Pfft! Not much further along. Still. I always have a place to come home to. have roots that I’m not likely to unearth anytime soon. Have a spot that carries my mark.

This should be my motto I think. Letting go of the dead cert, is not always a good thing, no matter what excitement it might hold…

I’m nearing another situation like that currently. I’ve never done sales. Think I’m too honest to be a sales person. Not that I can’t lie with a straight face, I can, I just don’t like cuckolding people, and I’ve been in  contact with many sales people that does just that. So, I might be offered this position. It might be more stable, more money – I hope! – but will it be something I can definitely do? Can I go for it? Dare I?

In closing.

In my adult life, the times when I took a chance on the unknown, it only brought good once in my life. All the other times was a huge stuff up.

Heed my words – a bird in hand is ALWAYS better than two in the bush. No matter that the bush birds are covered in gold, lay diamond eggs and piss wine. And the bird in hand just sits there and shits grain. Well, OK, I can see the attraction 😉

And to end with this tune. And I have to say. Old Mel Gibson works for me 😉

  2. On the sales side, there is no better salesman than one who is not naturally a salesman but who has become truly enthusiastic about the product. At one stage during my career, I found that with that as the background, I was a super-salesman. The minute the product faltered, so did my confidence and ability.
    Will this product inspire you?

    • Well, it’s an IT company, and I quite like technology.
Then I suppose it would depend entirely on the managers and the people I’ll be sharing space with.
I can only hope that this would be something I can do Col – after all, they picked me, not me them…

  4. Had a good laugh at the last few lines, which ring true. You have eighty percent, yet the twenty walking across the street seems pretty alluring. You leave 80 for the 20. 20 is a pain in the neck. 80 don’t want you back. What are the percentage you’re left with? Same moral, yet attraction seem to overthrow all other senses, which comes down to loving what you got while you still have it, right? That goes for everything in general. . . I would think that you’re quite persuasive, not? Yet, the lying, if necessary, don’t seem that good. Yet, if it’s a better job than you’re currently in, all the best, beautiful lady!! 😉

    • I’ve learnt to deal with the alluring things very carefully.
So many people think I’m anal because I look at all the angles from all the angles, but I’ve been bitten in the ass a few times too many – now only reality works 😉

      • Fantasy trumps reality. Or can make it one and live happy till the day you die. I’m there, and having an amazing time . . . as for the alluring, I don’t think I will ever be afraid of risks. Cautious, but not afraid. . . 😉

      • It might be quite a bit more boring on this side of the fence, but I think the older you get, the more responsibilities you have, the more you think of the repercussions of the alluring. So, while I’m not exactly afraid, I look at it from all angles – because there’s usually a noose somewhere 😉
